Communications

Mobile phones
Mobile communication is the most effective means of communication in Narok town, reliability is high and almost everyone has a cell phone in Narok. It cost as little as Ksh 50 to top up your pre-paid service and as little as Ksh 100 to purchase a phone line. If you are coming from the United States, T-mobile and Cingular phones will work, but they must be tri-band and unlocked (customer service will help you with this.) Currently no other U.S.-based service provider carries phones that will work in Kenya. If you are coming from Europe, your cell phone will work in Kenya (The Kenyan mobile phone network uses the GSM 900 system.) Most people use text messaging (SMS) to communicate, as it is very inexpensive. It costs 2KSh to send a message. Sending text messages abroad costs 10KSh per message*. You will need to buy a new SIM card in Nairobi or Narok, which you can purchase for about 100 Ksh.

E-mail access & International Calling Services
Maasai Education Discovery Center is the best place to check your email and use the web. The Business center at MED provides clients with high speed WIFI and Wired internet connectivity and is very reliable. The internet is through a satellite Internet connection to the USA. The Internet is very reliable. International calling services are also available at MED for less than Ksh 25 a minute so when visiting Narok, stop by the Business center at MED and make a quick call home.

Post Office
There is a post office opposite the MED center. The mail is quite reliable. Letters and packages take about two weeks to arrive from North America or Europe, and do not cost anything to receive. You can easily mail letters from Narok to home in about the same amount of time. Larger packages are much slower to arrive (they can take 4-5 weeks), and you often have to pay a large sum (import tax) to retrieve the package.
