Money & Banks

Banks
There are several banks in Narok were visitors can obtain local and foreign currencies.
The newest bank in town is Equity Bank, which opened in July 2006. Equity bank is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The branch manager is a Maasai man, very friendly and so far it’s the only bank that employee many locals. Other banks include National Bank of Kenya, Kenya Commercial Bank and Post Bank.

Currency
The currency in Kenya is Kenyan Shillings. The current exchange rates are as follows:
1 Euro = 93.97 KES
1 USD = 74.30 KES
1 CAD = 65.15 KES
1 BP = 137.56 KES

ATMS
There are five ATMs in Narok, but the machines do not yet accept international bankcards apart from VISA cards. However, you can use your own ATM card inside the bank. There are multiple banks in Nairobi that will allow you to withdraw money in Kenyan Shillings (Barclay, Standard Chartered and Stanbic). You will want to obtain a Visa bank/credit card prior to your departure if at all possible, as it is nearly universally accepted. If you only have a Master Card, you will need to use Barclays bank or Stanbic in Nairobi.

Traveler's Checks
If you choose not to use an ATM/bank card, there are a number of banks in Narok where you will be able to exchange traveler's checks. Be advised that some banks charge more commission than others; ask the
veteran volunteers which bank is offering the best service (lowest check cashing fee). It is more economical to cash fewer checks for larger amounts of money.

Credit Card
In Nairobi it is possible to pay with credit card in very many locations, but it is best not to count on it. In Narok, you can obtain money from MED with a credit card, although there will be a 5% charge per withdrawal in addition to regular fees assessed by your credit card company.
