Due to high levels of poverty and cultural factors like female genital mutilation (FGM) and early forced marriages, many girls in the Maasai community do not have access to education. MED provides individual donors with the mechanism to sponsor these girls, providing them with an opportunity they otherwise would miss. The scholarship program has initiated a significant increase in the levels of retention of Maasai girls in schools. This program was designed to make it easy for anyone around the world to sponsor Maasai students and maintain personal contact with those students. Anyone wishing/willing to support a needy Maasai student in either primary, secondary of tertiary level can participate with as little as $50 a month.
