The MED Cultural Art Centre is a facility dedicated to marketing the work of Maasai women who design and sell traditional art work. In the Narok region of Kenya, where MED does its work, Maasai women have limited opportunities to earn an income. One way in which they make money is by selling traditional artwork to tourists. Many tourists travel to Kenya, particularly to the area of Narok, on their way to and from the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. MED developed the Cultural Art Centre to help Maasai women market their artwork to local tourist as well as online to increase their income. The Cultural Art Centre provides Maasai women with space to display their wares and interact with customers in a spacious, non-threatening, and non-competitive environment. The women who sell traditional artwork are often illiterate, single mothers with no other way to support their children. These women benefit from an environment that protects their interests and prevents their exploitation. Their economic activities will be supported and valued, improving their lives and those of their children.
